MALLORCA TOP ATTRACTIONS

Mallorca's tourist attractions are more than just nightlife and beach. There are a variety of places to see; beside the natural beauty of coves and sea-life, the island offers a lot of interesting sites for those who are a little bit curious about the art, history and culture of Mallorca. Rent a lovely holiday home to use it as a sightseeing base for your vacation in Mallorca.

The Gardens of Alfabia in the city of Palma are one of Mallorca's major attraction points. The gardens date back to the time of Benhabet, the 13th century Muslim governor of the island. This beautiful garden was planned in Moorish manner and designed to be a reflection of Paradise on Earth. The water had been channeled from the surrounding mountains to irrigate the oasis-like gardens. From the roadside you will follow the imposing avenue of plain trees than you'll be redirected into the gardens where a footpath leads along the old stones covered with ivy. The gurgling watercourses called “alfagras” serve both practical and decorative purposes. The brightly colored flowers are cascading over the narrow terraces as palm and fruit trees rearing up to the sky. At the end of the path a mirror-like pool called the Queen's Bath is tangled by palm and bamboo trees. It's a refreshing feeling to admire this place especially on a hot summer day and the garden's snack bar offers big glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice. Another interesting thing here is the 15th century oak chair with scenes depicting the story of Tristan and Isolde, one of the oldest pieces of furniture on Mallorca.

The other attraction related to the Muslim architecture is the Arab Bath (pop-up picture) in Palma. The baths were constructed in the 10th century probably as a part of a palace and with heating through the floor. The bathroom was built as a dome in the shape of a half orange with 25 shafts for the sunlight. The arches rest on stone pillars taken from the ruins of the island's Roman buildings. These steam baths called “hammam” played an important role in the Muslim culture. They served both as a meeting place and wash houses. Well tended gardens surround this building and offered moments of refreshment for the tired visitors living in our holiday homes in Mallorca.

The Soller Railway is the best way to get a fine introduction into Mallorca’s mountainous charms and make a trip back in time. This little train is almost a hundred years old. Powered by an electric locomotive it links the city of Palma to the town of Soller on the north-west coastline since 1912. Old classic rail cars with mahogany panels and brass fittings will take you slowly but surely through the numerous tunnels. The train winds its way up along the feet of the Tramuntana mountain. The view is spectacular and you will see and smell orange and lemon groves everywhere. The destination is the small and lovely town of Soller.

From here you can take the Soller Tram down to the Port of Soller which is a paradise of calm and an ideal place to reach our holiday homes in Valldemossa

The 700 years old Bellver Castle offers a superb view of the city of Palma. Surrounded by fragrant pine woods, it’s a strikingly well preserved fortress built in the 14th century. The building has a circular layout imposing defense interior and royal exterior. The castle's enormously thick walls and sharp ditches are built around a central keep-tower that incorporates three imposing towers. The role of the castle has changed today from a military residence and prison to a tourist attraction point. The castle was also designed to serve as a royal retreat from the summer heat so the rough walls hide a pleasant two-leveled courtyard with Gothic arches and classical statues. Recently the castle's interior has been transformed into a museum that hosts sculptures and many artifacts from the city's history. It's worth going to the top of the castle for an amazing 360 degree panorama showing the foothills and the sea on the west and mountains on the north. You will smell the perfume of the neighboring pine woods mixed with the salty maritime breeze. Our beautiful holiday homes in Campos are ideal for a rest after this exhausting trip.

The Caves of Drach in Porto Cristo is something you shouldn't miss during your Mallorca holiday. These limestone caves were mapped out by French geologist Edouard Martel. The cave consists of four, 2 km long huge chambers. The last cavern is home to the largest underground lake of Europe some 177m long, 44m wide and 30m deep. Visitors are offered boat rides on the lake driven by skilled gondoliers through the breathtaking scenery of stalactites hanging from above, stalagmites growing from the ground and columns where these two meet. You can also admire the deep ravines with wonderful turquoise and aquamarine pools at the bottom. As part of your underground journey, hypnotic light effects accompany the live classical music performed from a small chamber ensemble floating by on a rowboat. The walking path is smooth without many obstacles and you can admire the largeness and beauty of the place in peace as no guides talk. The Caves of Drach are just one hour drive from our holiday homes in Felanitx.

The Palma Cathedral is the world's second largest Gothic cathedral, a symbol of the city and the island's most visited building. It's an imposing building with Gothic buttresses reinforced with a double row of flying arches. Legend has it that King Jaume I. () ordered it built after his fleet escaped from a terrible storm on its way to re-conquer Mallorca from the Arabs. The seaside Gothic front entrance is the most spectacular side. In the central nave 14 beautifully aligned pillars rise to 21m before their ribs branch out like palm trees. The huge, airy interior is astonishing for its harmonious proportions. Light comes through the rose windows studded with more than a 1000 pieces of stained glass. There are 20 chapels with their altarpieces displayed in cathedral museum. The tombs of Jaume II and Jaume III of Mallorca are in the Trinity Chapel. The cathedral can be visited all year from our holiday homes in Lloret de Vistalegre.
There are a significant number of family holiday attractions on the island. Most of them are located near water in Mallorca. Marineland is fantastic marine zoo where dolphins, seals and sea lions are showing off their acrobatic skills to the children's delight. Kids can also admire the sharks, penguins, tropical fish and the Polynesian garden, all at special prices for children between 3 and 12 and free for children under 3. Aqualand, Magaluf water park is the place to keep your children active all day long. Pools, slides and chutes abound at this giant water park and the main attraction is the Dragoland where kinds fall out through a dragon's mouth. Other hot spots are the Grand Canyon scoop slide and the Devil's Tail tube slide. The Western Park is a combination of water attractions and best entertaining shows around.
