TRAVEL TIPS FOR MALLORCA

Mallorca is one of the top European holiday destination and a favorite for British and German nationals. There are extremely large numbers of flights from the UK to Mallorca. Scheduled direct flights to Mallorca are available from all the major European and Spanish airports. Visitors from the US and Canada will have to make a connection somewhere in Europe most often in the UK or Germany. The major entry point to Mallorca is the Son Sant Joan airport located just 8 km from the center of Palma with taxis and buses transporting the visitors to the city and resorts. Buses leave from the main entrance of the terminal building just behind the taxi rank and have frequent stops reaching the inner ring road of Palma at Joan Maragall junction. You can get to Mallorca by ferry or jet foil from the mainland. Ferries and jet foils run from Barcelona and Valencia, Spain and usual trip with a jet foils lasts about 4-5 hours, with a ferry about 8-9 hours. The trip is comfortable offering a nice view over the western mountainous coast of Spain. The inter-island ferries also carry cars but the transport has to be booked in advance and no hired cars are allowed to be transferred to Mallorca.

Getting around Majorca: Mallorca has a reliable network of buses between all the major settlements, a great number of taxis and car rental companies a couple of very useful train lines. The smaller distances can be done with moped or bicycle. The buses in Palma and around Palma Bay are operated by the urban bus system (EMT) the rest of the island is covered by a range of bus companies coordinated by TIB (Transport of the Balear Islands). The central bus station is at Placa Espanya in Palma. You will find here an excellent TIB bus info center. All our holiday homes in Mallorca are included in the range of public transport lines. Passengers buy tickets from the driver if you haven't bought one at the station. Bus stops are clearly indicated by signs in bright colors. Bus service is drastically reduced on weekends. Local bus timetables are available in every tourism office. Click here for more info on bus routes, schedule and fees.
There are two railway lines in Mallorca, one from Palma to Soller the other from Palma through Inca and Manacor or Sa Pobla. The trip to Soller takes about an hour and a half and passes through the magnificent mountainous area of the island. The Inca line is not so spectacular but the departures are more frequent. It takes 40 minutes to get to Inca and another 20 to Sa Pobla where you need just a half an hour to reach our holiday homes in Colonia de St. Pere.

If you prefer to rent a car and drive in the countryside, there are a large number of international and local companies offering this service in the major holiday resorts, bigger towns and at the airport. To rent a car you must be at least 21 with one year driving experience and need to have a credit card, however many companies accept a deposit in cash.
Mopeds are very popular in Mallorca especially if you'd like to visit some remote places, the rental fee includes insurance and crash helmets but often excludes insurance against thefts.
Getting around by taxi in Mallorca is a reasonable option, the prices are moderate and you'll find enough taxis is Palma to give you a good chance of catching one in any hour of the night or day.
Telephones provided in the Mallorcan hotel rooms are a convenient but expensive solution, most public phones accept both phone cards and coins and can be used for local and international calls. The calls are cheaper between 10 PM and 8 AM and all day on Sunday. The minimum cost of a call is usually 2 Euros. Using your mobile phone in Mallorca is very expensive and we recommend you to buy a Spanish mobile carrier SIM card pack upon arrival.
Most of our holiday homes have Internet facilities and there are many cafes and bars in the main resorts and town that offer the service as well as a few specific points and hot spots in Palma. If you and your family need a broadband Internet connection we recommend you our holiday homes in Campos Mallorca.
