OUTDOOR & SPORTS IN MALLORCA

Mallorca's Mediterranean climate is a magnet for outdoor activities and exercise in the nature in Mallorca. Hundreds of facilities provide unforgettable experiences. The offer covers the range of beginners and the advanced. In all the larger resorts water sports is in vogue; from sailing, windsurfing and jet skiing to scuba diving and snorkeling. Equally popular is hiking with hundreds of hikers descending on the Serra de Tramuntana in spring and autumn. The perfect combination of mountains, flat and coastal regions offer a real chance for golf, kite surfing and cycling lovers.
For scuba diving and snorkeling in Mallorca virtually all the coves around the island are ideal with plenty of reefs and wrecks to discover. The best diving place is around the Island of Dragonera and off Cala Figuera. Here the best known dive spot is the Conga Wreck at 36m. There isn't much left from the wreck itself but the marine life on this artificial reef is spectacular. Golden Rock is another location for deep dive full of yellow corals, lots of octopus, barracuda and cardinal fish. There are several centers for scuba diving in Cala Rajada and Port d'Andratx close to Valldemossa offering equipment and boat for driving out to the best diving places.
If you find scuba diving too difficult, snorkeling is the perfect activity for your Mallorca holiday. Mask, snorkel and fins are just enough to admire the fascinating marine life of Mallorca. If you haven't tried it before but you're not afraid of the water, just enter one of the diving centers and you'll get professional advice. There are beaches and bays everywhere to snorkel and swim or you can start this adventure off the coast from a boat. Equipment is available in many shops or for hire at some hotels and diving clubs. A popular snorkeling destination is the Port of Pollenca with spectacular underwater cliffs and caves.

Windsurfing is popular all around the island but it's really best only on the eastern and southern coast where the waters tend to be calmer like in the protected bay of the Port de Soller.

Recommended places are the Bay of Palma and the Bay of Alcudia located just in the neighborings of our holiday homes in Colonia de St. Pere.
A large number of shops offer equipment for windsurfing. Mallorca is not the wildest place for professional windsurfers but a great holiday destination for beginners to start learning.
Away from the coast, Hiking and Climbing in Mallorca is a popular sport activity. The island is the hikers dream with no end of trails many of them marked and mapped out. Check out our holiday homes in the mountains. The high season for hiking is the spring and autumn within the range of Serra Tramuntana. (pop-up picture) You will admire one of the most stunning and unspoilt mountain scenery in the Mediterranean. Pine forests, remote farmsteads, ancient pilgrim trails, rolling olive groves, 1000m rocky peaks are the hallmarks of these hiking routes. The village Sollér and the monastery of Lluc are the most important starting points for the hikes. There are satisfying challenges for climbers too on the rocky cliffs abounding along the entire length of the Serra Tramuntana. This unspoilt natural area is extremely close to our restful holiday homes in Campos.
Cycling can be a cheap way of getting around Mallorca. You will often see groups of avid cyclists in their colorful suits from the steepest mountain roads to the narrowest stone-walled streets of Mallorcan countryside. Cycling tracks are designed to avoid the busy roads with high traffic providing sections of plain as well as steep climbs. Renting an ordinary bike costs between 6 and 9 Euro for a day and a bit more for a mountain bike. Several routes are available for tourists, we recommend the Palma – Soller trip. It is a 66km long route passing through the famous locations of Valldemossa and Deia and can be easily done with a road bike.

Horse riding. The unique countryside of Mallorca is worth to be discovered on a horseback. There are several riding schools and stables offering riding and jumping classes with experienced multi lingual teachers. Beach and mountain trips on horseback or horse drawn wagon drives are available. One hour ride with professional guide costs about 25-30 Euros. The island is dotted with horse riding clubs like Equestrian Center and Pony Club in S'Arajassa (Palma), Hipica Formentor and Ranco Grande in Alcudia a few miles away from Colonia de St. Pere.
Golf attracts more and more visitors to Mallorca. Courses are widespread near the popular resorts and some of the bigger hotels have their own greens. There are about 18 major golf courses scattered around the island all with exceptional combination of holes set in a peaceful natural scene with beautiful landscapes from the mountains to the sea. The best golf resorts in Mallorca are: Golf Son Vida 13 km of Palma, the first golf course in the island but still one of the best, Golf Andratx recently opened and pretty expensive, Golf de Benidat, a hilly course with pine trees 5km from Palma with an awesome view to the see. Click for more holiday homes for golf vacations all around Europe.
Kite surfing Mallorca has convenient wind power all year for the fans of kite surfing. The recommended season is spring because between June and September the beaches are very crowded and there's a risk to drift into a swimming area. Most surfing clubs have added kite surfing equipments to their inventory. The prominent kit surfing spots are at Palma Nova, Es Trenc and Alcudia beaches.
