CUISINE AND RESTAURANTS IN MALLORCAAs a famous holiday destination Mallorca is full of places to eat and you will find a large number of restaurants offering dishes for all tastes and likes. The local cuisine is a fine mixture of authentic Catalan and Arabic receipts served originally in the family-run restaurants situated off the main holiday resorts. The Mallorcan cuisine is based on pork, fish and vegetables with a generous use of garlic and olive oil. The most typical dish is “porcella” a delicious pork gently roasted in an oven for hours. “Llom amb col” is a pork wrapped in cabbage with pine nuts and raisins. Sausages come in several varieties; raw minced pork with hot red pepper (sobrasada) and cured pork with blood are the locals favorite. Another delicious local food is the Alberginies Farcides – aubergines stuffed with meat, fried with olive oil and baked in tomato sauce. Caragols (snails) are carefully cooked with aromatic herbs. This is the meal that people find most exotic.The Mallorcan vines become more and more popular. Highly appreciated red and white vines are produced in Binissalem, La Rioja and Petra Porreras. An interesting local drink is “Herbas” a liqueur made from herbs. If you're not crazy about the native cooks, you will find plenty of restaurants serving English, German, Italian and even Chinese food along with hundreds of fast foods making burgers, fish and chips or other delights for hungry visitors spending their summer holidays in Mallorca. Standards vary according to the location but almost every resort, town or village has at least a couple of good places. The best restaurants often use the local produce with seafood, pig and lamb. Es Parlament is one of Palma's fanciest restaurants with an excellent cuisine in paella. A fine old building with gilt-wood mirrors and candle holders. The tasty “menu del dia” is recommended and for dessert you should try some ice cream with roasted almonds. Caballito del Mar or the Little Seahorse restaurant is a lovely place to eat just a short walk from the Cathedral of Palma. With elegant table clothes and fast moving waiters this place offers fresh seafood like lobster pot, grilled shellfish salver, sea bass in fennel sauce and the specialty of the house: sea bream baked in salt. The large and attractive terrace has a charming view on the fishing harbor nearby. Ca'n Carlos (Palma) is the best choice if you'd like to taste Mallorcan cooking at its very best. La Boveda, is the place to come for the very best “tapas” in Palma. This place is always full of people who love the Basque-Catalan cuisine. Wild mushrooms, artichokes and fried squid are worth asking for and don't miss the red peppers stuffed with cod. Situated in a wonderful location high up on the cliffs at the Port of Soller with majestic view on the ocean Es Faro will refresh your body and spirit. The unforgettable dining experience is granted by the marvelous setting, candlelit tables outside, good vine, delicious food and friendly service. Es Faro offers an excellent menu of the day and a la carte at night. Absolutely recommended for couples longing for some romance. Restaurant Miramar in the port of Alcudia is specialized on fresh seafood offering delicious paella and the traditional lobster caldereta. The dining rooms are decorated in a marine style and it has two large terraces with view on the sea. The King of Spain dines at this centrally located up market place. It is another place where seafood is prepared in original ways. At the water tank by the entrance diners can choose which type of fish they would like to eat. Orient Express in the La Lonja sector of Palma is a smaller restaurant with less publicity but an interesting place to have a meal. Good prices are the hallmark of our vacation homes all around Europe Everybody knows that Mallorca and especially the capital city Palma is a shopping hub, a place full of colorful street-markets, boutiques, beach-front shops and shopping malls. The larger stores are opened from 9am to 9pm particularly in the main tourist areas. Some smaller shops are closed between 2-5 PM with regards to the well known Mediterranean afternoon siesta. Street markets offer a unique opportunity to try out local specialties and buy fresh products. Sineu Market is the largest livestock market in the island opened every Wednesday. Along cheese, fruit and vegetables you'll find cows, horses, donkeys, hens, goats, ducks and the rare Mallorcan black pig in person or in a sausage to take home. There's a great variety of handmade works like pottery, leather goods etc. Bargaining, especially if you buy more than one thing is perfectly acceptable. Sineu is just 5 km away from our holiday homes in Lloret de Vistalegre. Porto Pi Centro is probably the best shopping mall in Mallorca located at the western end of the Paseo Maritimo. It hosts a large number of shops selling everything from designer clothes and shoes to motorbikes. Upstairs there's a cinema often showing movies in English and plenty of cafes restaurants and a big Carrefour supermarket. Avinguda Jaume III is the exclusive shopping street, one of Palma's most elegant avenue full a chic boutiques offering men's and woman's fashion, jewelry and gifts with famous labels like Cartier and Loewe. Here you will find Persepolis, Palma's number one antique shop selling major works in religious sculpture, Old Master paintings, oriental carpets, small silver and enamel pieces. A very popular place among tourist is the El Corte Ingles a vast super-store where you'll find everything you need. It has a spacious underground car park and restaurant with full menu. The biggest vine producer of Mallorca and the maker of the best red vines operates in a modest bodega on the southern edge of Binissalem, a beautiful village with aristocratic houses. Here at the Bodega de Jose Luis Ferrer you can take a tour in the perfumed vineyards and purchase this superb vine. The picturesque town of Binissalem is located north-west from our holiday homes in Lloret de Vistalegre Majorica is the best known factory producing Majorca pearls. Before you buy these famous, natural looking pearls you can witness the producing method that involves fish scales, repeated baking and polishing. |
